In the history of modern China, the family system has been a focal point of social reform. Although Western liberalism emphasizes individual rights, marginalizing the role of the family, in most regions of the world, the family and familial relationships still hold central significance In these societies, the family is often the foundation of self-identity. Therefore, the concept of family as a philosophical motif can offer fresh perspectives on various social issues, such as gender equality, aging, homelessness, and social justice.
The project is jointly led by Roger T. Ames, Humanities Chair Professor at Peking University and Co-Chair of the Academic Advisory Council of the Berggruen Research Center, Peking University, and Sun Xiangchen, Distinguished Professor at Fudan University and 2024–2025 Berggruen Fellow.
