Vaster Than Empires (VTE) is an invite-only writers’ retreat and story incubator dedicated to speculative storytelling that pushes the boundaries of science and philosophy. Inspired by the legacy of Ursula K. Le Guin, the retreat was originally designed for renowned sci-fi authors to develop short-form speculative fiction. Now in its third year, VTE is expanding its scope to Hollywood, bringing screenwriters into direct dialogue with leading futurists, scientists, and A-list filmmakers.

A seven-day immersive retreat this July in Southern California blending intellectual exploration, hands-on creative development, and industry networking.
- Exclusive access to leading scientists, philosophers, and technologists shaping our future.
- Out-of-this-world experiences including exclusive visits to Google’s Quantum AI Lab, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and other cutting-edge research hubs, writers will engage in deep conversations with leading experts
- A structured creative incubator designed to help writers develop and pitch fresh, high-concept speculative film and TV projects.
- The Retreat Experience: A secluded, inspiring setting where writers will refine their ideas into compelling concepts or stories
- Final Pitches to A-List Filmmakers: Writers will present their projects to a high-profile industry panel, offering panelists and producers the opportunity to explore attachment agreements and further develop projects with strong potential.
- Studio B. Development Support: Select pitches will receive funding from Berggruen Institute’s Studio B, with Studio B staying on as a creative partner to support further development, packaging, and industry placement. In addition to funding, Studio B will provide ongoing access to leading scientists, technologists, and futurists to help writers refine their concepts and ensure their stories are grounded in cutting-edge ideas.
