Beyond Nations and Empires? Dialogues from a Non-European Perspective

Wang Hui and Walter Mignolo - each leading thinkers of the meaning of modernity, empire and autonomy in China and Latin America respectively - had a dialogue in Europe, at the Berggruen Institute Europe headquarters, for a unique dialogue on the ways inherited histories and political dynamics are shaping the contemporary world, and how a pluralist planetary politics can be brought to emerge as an alternative to conflict.
Walter Mignolo's research and teaching have focused, in theist 30 years, to understanding and unraveling the historical foundation of the modern/colonial world system and imaginary since 1500. He continues to be devoted to exposing modernity/coloniality as a machine that generates and maintains un-justices and to exploring decolonize ways of delinking from it.
Wang Hui is one of the most acclaimed intellectuals worldwide. His magnus opus The Rise of Modern Chinese Thought delineates the long history of China’s paths to modernity. Together with his writings on political thoughts, especially during the period that he calls the “short twentieth century”, his thinking is crucial for understanding some of the gridlocks in politics today. His research interests include Chinese intellectual history, Chinese literature and social and political theory.
