Position Overview

The Berggruen Institute is seeking a creative and detail-oriented independent contractor to fill a Junior Graphic Designer role which will support the design needs of various projects related to our different programs. As a contractor, the individual will work on a project-to-project basis with defined scopes of work and deliverables. While collaboration with internal teams is essential, this position requires the ability to operate independently, manage multiple priorities, and bring strategic
recommendations for platform growth and engagement.

This role is ideal for a designer with 2- 4 years of professional experience who thrives in a fast-paced environment, can balance multiple projects, and enjoys collaborating with cross-functional teams.

Working closely with the Design Director and the Senior Program Manager of Integrated Communications & Design, the Jr. Graphic Designer will create compelling visual content that aligns with the Institute’s brand standards. This position requires proficiency in fundamental design principles, excellent time management skills, and a keen eye for detail.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and produce basic assets for multiple programs, including social media graphics, presentations, reports, event materials, and web content.
  • Maintain and apply brand guidelines across all creative projects.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to conceptualize and execute design solutions that enhance storytelling and engagement.
  • Support the development of marketing collateral, such as infographics, email templates, and promotional materials.
  • Photo editing and motion graphics, as needed.
  • Manage multiple design projects simultaneously, ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Maintain an organized asset library and contribute to workflow improvements.

Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of professional experience in graphic design, preferably in a marketing, nonprofit, or agency setting.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects), Figma, and Canva
  • Strong motion graphics, visual storytelling and typography skills.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize projects, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Basic understanding of digital and print design principles.
  • Knowledge of social media best practices and designing for multiple platforms.
  • Ideal candidate has a broad range of interest/curiosity in politics, current affairs, and
    academic research

Compensation

Compensation range for this project based work is $32-$40 per hour, commensurate with professional experience, and requires a minimum involvement of 20 hours per week.
