A conversation with Nicholas Berggruen and Nathan Gardels about how globalization and technology have given rise to a populist backlash against income inequality across Europe and the US, threatening our democratic systems.

Berggruen and Gardels, co-authors of Renovating Democracy, will propose ways to counter populism by using social media to bring people together at home, and by finding a new partnership structure to deal with China and other economic competitors overseas. Their talk comes as populism is polarizing democratic politics in the US, France, Italy, Hungary, Poland and Brexit-era Britain, and at the same time protesters in Hong Kong are challenging the authority of one-party rule in China.
